Hannah & Clint’s bathroom disaster

H2 RM1 Bathroom Clint & Hannah-02

Well, they’ve gotta sack their tiler. The only chance they’ve got is if I contact Fabian and try and get him to come and have a look at it and see if it can be repaired.

I contacted my good mates at Beaumont and they are throwing in all the tiles for nothing, so that’s 9K worth of tiles that they’re getting for nothing, which they’ve already paid for once, but they were going to have to pay for it twice.

So, I have contacted Fabian, turns out he can’t fix it, so they’re gonna have to strip it—and Fabian will come in and tile it, and he always does a great job. So, it’s a disaster, and they may not recover from it.

Alice is the editor of Domain Magazine that goes into the papers, she is a real estate journalist, she knows the real estate market oh too well. She knows what the buyer’s looking for, she knows what buyer is in Elsternwick, and what the Elsternwick buyer is looking for. So, it’s very important to listen to her and try and take some feedback from her. Read her full interview with The Block below.

Tell us a little about what you’ll be doing?

I’ve been involved with The Buyers’ Jury for the past two years, but this year the producers offered me the opportunity to do a bit more. In reality, we’re actually selling houses here, and I think buyers are more discerning than ever. Agents will say this: ‘Gone are the days when a great house will sell itself.’ You have got to think about that buyer, right from the start.

And that’s where you come in?

Yes. I think what the producers realised had been a bit lacking, historically, was that the contestants were creating a space they thought would sell – but not necessarily thinking about who that buyer is; what works, and what buyers want.

And that can be harder than it sounds…

It’s important to look at what is happening in the wider market. Even though it’s a national show, what we are seeing in Melbourne is very reflective, particularly of what is happening in Sydney, and the Brisbane market. So we are trying to bring it home, and say, ‘We know you are creating amazing houses – but you need to be able to sell them.’

Will you be doing a walk-through each week?

Yes. I walk through with Shelley and Scotty every Friday, when the contestants are three quarters of the way through. But a lot can happen Friday to Sunday. When I walk through, they usually have the shell all in place, they know what they are doing – hopefully – and they are starting to get their furniture coming in. Having said that, when I go through the following week, I look back on what they did, and it’s often very different from what I was picturing.

So talk us through what’s at stake for them…

I am giving out points, so the winner each week also gets $5000 from Domain –  $2,500 in cash, and $2,500 that goes towards their marketing spend on Domain. The more they put in their marketing spend, the more bells and whistles they’ll have online, and the wider the reach. The winner overall, with the highest points, will be on the cover of Domain magazine. We have an audience of two million nationally, and the past two seasons of The Block, that house that has got on the cover of Domain has gone on to win overall.

That’s huge!

Yes, it is. We feel strongly about the power of editorial to really sell a property. You can spend a lot on a marketing campaign, which is great, but the endorsement that editorial gives anything – that’s huge.

You could say the stakes are higher than ever…

They are really high. It’s really fun doing those walk-throughs each week, and looking at who is really thinking about the bigger picture.

Well, some couples are talking about pools and they’re crazy because they don’t know how their budget is going to go, and some of them are spending too much money on their bathroom already.

So, house number one is never going to be able to afford a swimming pool, and house number 2 will struggle as well.

Some of the others—if they don’t win rooms, it’s only week one, they’re never going to be able to afford a swimming pool. It’s a bit down the track to be talking pools.

5 things you should think about before starting on a bathroom reno

Wk1 Hannah & Clint working-18

Over the years I’ve seen even our most seasoned Blockheads come undone during bathroom week.

Given I’ve done more than a few bathrooms reno’s over the years I wanted to share with you 5 things everyone should think about before starting on a bathroom reno…

  1. Have all your tradies in place, cause there’s a lot of trades involved in a bathroom reno.

  2. Make sure your waterproofing is 100% waterproof, and is authorised by a licensed water-proofer.

WATERPROOFING_2

3. Plan your bathroom out well in advance so you know exactly where everything is going and making sure that you’ve got enough room to sit on the toilet, enough room to swing a cat in the shower.

RG ROOM PLANNING_4

4.Make sure your trades like your tiler are in play, which is very important. And make sure your tiler has come recommended as it’s very easy to muck up tiling, so make sure your tiler is a good one!

5. And most importantly – WATCH YOUR BUDGET!

Why we move The Block houses

A lot of you Blockaholics might be wondering why we move the houses for the show, so here’s a little explanation as to why we do it.

Regent Street-18

Moving the houses is a great alternative to demolishing them, and I cut my teeth on those styles of homes— timber frame, weatherboard— so I love that style of house and it gives you instant heritage in the street. You can’t rebuild that sort of house—well you can, but it’s better to get an old one that’s got a little bit of life about it and save it from demolition. Plus, it’s a cost-effective way of putting a house on a block of land, too.

House Plans Lot-02

I’m really excited for this season, I think our contestants are very competitive, they’re fantastic. The houses are incredible, the block of land is incredible. It’s the biggest block we’ve ever done, floorspace-wise, and I think that the friction between our competitive contestants, the rollercoaster of the whole show, is going to make for compelling viewing.
